Most people have this problem when purchasing a new house where a back or side door opens straight into dirt, and sometimes the California soil does not take to grass very easily. Or the second problem may be that you have kids or pet that just can stop running around in the dirt while the grass is fighting to grow. I huge fix for that is to go with a deck or cement patio.
Take a look and you will notice that as a pre-thought we asked the client if they enjoy gardening so we added a small strip area between the fence and the patio to allow of gardening. So the client wanted something a little more wavy instead of straight so we added a nice curvy border that will wrap on that on strip of the cement.
